How does Plugless Power™ make charging EVs easier?
Plugless Power™ eliminates the cord and the headaches by automating the charging of EVs. Handling a cord seems relatively simple until you factor in hassles brought on by snow, rain, cluttered garages and crowded parking lots. Never again bother with plugging in your vehicle each day when you return home from work. Never again wake up to realize you forgot to plug in and do not have enough charge to get to work. With Plugless Power, you can charge your car without getting your hands dirty.
What technology forms the basis of Plugless Power™?
Magnetic induction, the backbone of the nation’s electrical grid and the basis of transformer technology, has been around since 1885. Drawing on MTC Transformers’ twenty years of leadership in customizing transformers, Evatran™ is now applying magnetic induction to the charging of EVs. Plugless Power™ electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) connects the on-board EV battery charger inductively to the electrical power source. Simply put, the two halves of the electric transformer are separated – one installed on the vehicle and one installed on the floor of a garage or parking space (housed in the Plugless Power parking block). When the two pieces are brought together, electrical current flowing in the parking block from the electrical grid causes current to flow into the vehicle adapter, thereby charging the battery. With the Plugless Power™ dual-component EVSE, current flows from one source to another without using a plug and a cord, enabling “hands-free” charging.
Without a cord, is energy lost in the transfer?
Current electrical transformers installed throughout the world attain efficiency ratings of above 90%, and Plugless Power anticipates equally as competitive efficiency ratings with this product. With Plugless Power, the parking block aligns itself with the vehicle adapter so very little energy is lost in the transfer.
Since there is a small energy loss, does this mean my charge time is longer?
Although Plugless Power™ does anticipate a small efficiency loss (less than 10%), this does not translate to an increased charging time. The capacity of an EV’s battery to accept charge is not affected by the efficiency loss. The battery will continue to accept the same amount of power at one time, but the charger will draw additional watts from the electrical outlet to compensate for the small efficiency loss.
What is Evatran™ doing to support the expansion of EV infrastructure?
Recognizing that frequent and worry-free charging of electric vehicles is essential to their volume acceptance, Plugless Power is helping build the infrastructure required to make electric vehicles viable. We are excited to begin working with EV enthusiasts throughout the industry – those who manufacture, those who sell, and those who drive. As the product continues to develop, we will be adding additional features to benefit hosted parking facilities, municipalities, and businesses. The needs of the EV infrastructure industry will undeniably change and evolve as the world moves towards EVs. Plugless Power™ is poised to adapt to this rapidly changing and exciting landscape.
When will Plugless Power™ be available?
Initial Plugless Power™ field trials will begin in the second quarter of 2010 around our headquarters in Southwestern Virginia. A number of additional phases of prototypes will be available following the Wytheville field trials in 2010. Together with our development partners, we aim to be at production capability by early 2011 with the ability to ramp up to full demand at that time.
How much will a Plugless Power™ unit cost me?
Plugless Power™ is priced competitively to charging stations currently on sale to the general public with the added benefit of supplying users with a luxury service: effortless charging. We will also be reviewing installation costs for its units to offer a more competitive total cost package.
Where will the Plugless Power™ system be manufactured?
Plugless Power™ will be wholly designed and manufactured within the United States. Like our parent company, MTC Transformers™, we are dedicated to basing 100% of manufacturing in the U.S. to provide employees with meaningful long-term employment and make a firm commitment to domestic manufacturing.
How will Plugless Power™ be distributed and installed?
Plugless Power is still deep within the product development and prototype stage with its revolutionary product. The management team has been evaluating electric vehicle industry requirements in order to assess the best way to distribute and install its systems. As Plugless Power™ moves towards finalization, more information will be released concerning distribution and installation plans.
